How Bitcoin fees work

Bitcoin fees are not based on how much you send. They depend on the size of your transaction in virtual bytes and on how busy the network is. Miners pick the transactions that pay the highest fee rate (satoshis per virtual byte, sat/vB) first, so a higher rate gets confirmed sooner. When few people are transacting, even the lowest rate confirms quickly. A transaction that spends many small coins is larger and costs more than one that spends a single coin.

How Ethereum gas fees work

Every Ethereum transaction uses an amount of gas that depends on what it does: a plain ETH transfer uses 21,000 gas, a token transfer or a swap uses more. You pay that gas at the current gas price, made up of a base fee, which is burned and moves with demand, plus a small tip to the validator. Our guide what are gas fees explains it step by step. Layer 2 networks usually cost far less; see what is a layer 2.

Network fees vs exchange fees

The figures on this page are what the blockchain charges. When you withdraw from an exchange, the exchange sets its own withdrawal fee, which is often a fixed amount and can be higher than the network fee. Trading fees and spreads are separate again: see crypto trading fees explained.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to send Bitcoin right now?

The live cost of a typical payment at each speed is in the table above, in sat/vB and in US dollars. It refreshes every five minutes.

Why are Ethereum fees so low today?

Ethereum’s base fee rises when blocks are more than half full and falls when they are not. Much everyday activity has moved to layer 2 networks, so main-network blocks are often less busy and the base fee is low. It can still jump quickly during busy periods.

When is the cheapest time to send?

Fees drop when fewer people are transacting, often at weekends. If you are not in a hurry, choose the lowest rate in your wallet or wait for a quiet period.
