Hong Kong has extended its tokenized settlement pilot to round-the-clock real-value transactions, with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority telling Hong Kong FinTech Week on Monday that banks and their clients can now move tokenized money through EnsembleTX at any hour. According to Crypto Briefing, Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Limited had already switched on a tokenized deposits service in Hong Kong with Ant International as its first customer, having formally launched the product on December 18, 2025.

The HKMA also said recognised dealers had finished secondary-market trial trades in tokenized Exchange Fund Bills and that regulated stablecoins would join later government debt testing, per crypto.news and Cointelegraph. No start date for that expansion has been announced.

Key facts

  • The HKMA’s EnsembleTX pilot now supports 24/7 real-value settlement of tokenized transactions, announced at Hong Kong FinTech Week on November 2, 2026.
  • HSBC Group CEO Georges Elhedery said its Hong Kong dollar stablecoin RedCoin had reached 50,000 users since launching on October 23 through the PayMe app.
  • Crypto Briefing reported that Standard Chartered’s tokenized deposit service moves HKD, CNH and USD in Hong Kong, and SGD and USD in Singapore, and that a real-money transfer of HK$3.8 million took place in November 2025 during pilot phases.
  • crypto.news reported that EnsembleTX as of November 2026 counted 12 banks and 20 industry participants.
  • The HKMA launched Project SAGE on AI agent governance and, with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, a post-quantum cryptography toolkit, crypto.news reported.

What changed from the old settlement rails

Participating banks previously routed some payments through Hong Kong’s existing dollar settlement system, which tied them to conventional banking hours; the upgrade lets tokenized transactions clear when traditional markets are shut. crypto.news noted that the city had signalled continuous settlement using tokenized central bank money by the end of 2026, and Cointelegraph reported that HKMA Chief Executive Eddie Yue described tokenized central bank money as a “foundation layer” for 24/7 settlement, with tokenized bonds, money market funds and bank deposits already in use.

The pilot’s dates are reported differently. Crypto Briefing says Project Ensemble started in May 2024 and was formally launched on December 18, 2025, while crypto.news and Cointelegraph date the project to March 2024, with a sandbox opened in August 2024 and real-value trials from November 2025. Crypto Briefing also reported a landmark pilot transfer in November 2025, which the other two outlets do not mention.

Bank deposits and stablecoins on the same rails

Standard Chartered is involved on two fronts, Crypto Briefing reported: tokenized deposits for corporate clients, and distribution of the regulated HKDAP stablecoin, which it was first to distribute. Ant International uses the deposit service to shift cash between its own entities for intercompany liquidity, plugging the rails into its Whale treasury platform.

The retail side is moving too. Elhedery said HSBC was targeting “multi-million users” for RedCoin and that the bank offers tokenized deposits to wholesale clients in Hong Kong and about half a dozen other jurisdictions, Cointelegraph reported. crypto.news noted that the 50,000 figure does not show how many customers transact repeatedly or the total value moved. HSBC and Anchorpoint Financial — a venture backed by Animoca Brands and Standard Chartered — were licensed as stablecoin issuers in April 2026.

Why it matters

Tokenized settlement has moved from crypto-native experiments to production use by a major global bank under a supervisor’s framework. For corporate treasurers, the change targets trapped liquidity: cash sitting in one entity over a weekend while another entity needs it. Regulated stablecoins entering government debt trials would place them inside the traditional banking system rather than alongside it.

What to watch

Two concrete items: the HKMA’s timetable for adding regulated stablecoins to the tokenized Exchange Fund Bills trials, which it has not yet published, and whether RedCoin’s 50,000 users convert into recurring payment volume as HSBC extends the token to its mobile banking app and tokenized investment subscriptions, including a Hong Kong dollar money market fund share class.
