Tether earned $1.5 billion in net operating profit during the third quarter of 2026 and rebuilt its reserve cushion to roughly $7.95 billion, according to an attestation prepared by accounting firm BDO and published this week, Crypto Briefing reported.

The buffer is close to double the $4.11 billion Tether recorded at the end of June 2026. Crypto.news reported that total reserve assets reached $191.45 billion as of September 30 against $183.50 billion in liabilities, putting the cushion at about 4.34% of liabilities versus roughly 2.24% three months earlier. Profit for the first three quarters of 2026 stood at $4.5 billion.

Key facts

  • Net operating profit for Q3 2026 was $1.5 billion, with nine-month profit at $4.5 billion.
  • Excess reserves were about $7.95 billion at September 30, up from $4.11 billion at June 30 and close to the $8.23 billion peak in Q1 2026.
  • Total reserve assets were approximately $191.5 billion, including $132.4 billion in direct and indirect US Treasury bill holdings.
  • USDT issuance held broadly steady at $184 billion across the first three quarters, despite market volatility.
  • Crypto.news reported the reserve mix also included $19.08 billion in physical gold and $8.37 billion in Bitcoin, valued at a September 30 price of $83,621.23 per coin.

How the cushion moved through 2026

The excess reserve figure has swung sharply this year. It peaked at $8.23 billion in the first quarter, fell to $4.11 billion in the second, and has now recovered to near $8 billion. Crypto.news noted that assets rose by roughly $3.7 billion between June and September while liabilities edged lower. The attestation is a snapshot, so it shows the before and after rather than the reason for the second-quarter contraction; Crypto Briefing noted that a buffer can shrink through asset write-downs, strategic allocations or distributions out of excess.

BDO prepared the filing under the ISAE 3000R standard. Crypto.news also reported a separate equity reconciliation showing a $1.66 billion financial result for January through September and $519 million in net capital outflows, taking opening equity of $6.81 billion to $7.95 billion at quarter-end. That reconciliation measures something different from the $4.5 billion operating profit figure. The same filing’s footnote states that shareholders approved audited 2025 financial statements on August 13, 2026, and management aligned comparative figures and opening equity with those statements.

Where the earnings come from

Tether’s model is straightforward: users exchange dollars for USDT, and the issuer holds the backing in short-term government securities and reverse repurchase agreements. A reverse repo is effectively a very short, collateralized loan that earns interest and can be unwound quickly. The yield accrues to Tether, not to token holders, which is how a stablecoin issuer reaches $4.5 billion in operating profit across three quarters on $184 billion in issuance. Crypto.news put cash, cash-equivalent and short-term deposits at $139.58 billion, about 72.9% of reserves, alongside $14.18 billion in secured loans and $6 billion in other investments.

That structure ties Tether’s earnings to short-term interest rates: high yields make the Treasury pile lucrative, and falling yields would shrink the same pile’s return. Crypto.news reported $122.84 billion of the Treasury holdings were directly held bills with a weighted average maturity under 90 days, with $9.52 billion in overnight repos and $7.18 billion in term repos.

Why it matters

USDT is the largest dollar-pegged token by circulation, so the size of Tether’s cushion is a direct signal about how comfortably redemptions could be met in a stress event. CEO Paolo Ardoino framed reserve policy around that scenario, saying in the announcement that the company’s responsibility is to keep USDT dependable when people need it most, according to crypto.news. With $132.4 billion in US government debt, Tether is among the larger private holders of short-term Treasuries, which supports liquidity but also links the token’s backing to the US rates market and to how fast those holdings could be sold. Flat issuance near $184 billion over three volatile quarters suggests demand neither surged nor drained.

What to watch

The next attestation, covering the fourth quarter, will show whether excess reserves climb back past the Q1 high of $8.23 billion and whether issuance breaks out of its $184 billion holding pattern. Profit will also track the interest rate backdrop, since Treasury and repo income supplies most of it.
