Hyperliquid Burns 4.99% of HYPE Supply as Market Cap Hits $20B

Hyperliquid has now bought back and destroyed roughly 49.87 million HYPE tokens, a total equal to 4.99% of the 1 billion maximum supply and valued at about $3.89 billion at current prices, according to CoinCentral. The burn figure was first circulated by Wu Blockchain.
The market capitalisation of HYPE has climbed back above $20 billion after a roughly 5% rise in a day, and the token is trading just under $81 after breaking a downward trendline that had capped it for about a month. CoinCentral reported that a scheduled regulated US perpetuals product from Payward, the owner of Kraken, is the main force behind the move.
Key facts
- About 49.87 million HYPE has been bought back and burned, equal to 4.99% of the 1 billion maximum supply and worth roughly $3.89 billion, per Wu Blockchain.
- A further 19,700 HYPE, valued at $1.59 million, was burned in the past 24 hours, alongside an estimated $1.69 million in protocol fees.
- Cumulative protocol revenue stands at about $1.38 billion, and Hyperliquid recorded $63.94 million in holder revenue over the past month, more than any other protocol.
- Onchain Lens data shows a whale bought more than 123,000 HYPE, worth $10 million, from Wintermute after a month of inactivity.
- Spot HYPE ETFs from Bitwise, Grayscale and 21Shares have not logged a single day of net inflows since October 6, per SoSoValue data cited by CoinCentral.
The burn and the Payward plan behind the move
Hyperliquid’s buyback-and-burn mechanism removes tokens using protocol revenue. Reducing supply matters for scarcity, but the larger catalyst this week came from outside the exchange. Payward intends to offer a regulated US perpetuals product on Hyperliquid, run through Bitnomial and Ninja Trader Clearing. That offering has not yet secured regulatory approval.
Large holders responded to the dip. The $10 million purchase from market maker Wintermute was executed by a wallet that had been quiet for a month, according to Onchain Lens. CoinCentral also noted that Hyperliquid’s public onchain data creates a visibility risk around counterparty positions, citing AMBCrypto.
Chart signals and ETF flows
On the technical side, the break above the month-long descending trendline is a tentative improvement. The MACD reading sat only faintly positive, and Chaikin Money Flow eased from 0.24 to 0.13 while capital left Binance’s perpetuals market. Clearing $81 would open $88 and $94 as later hurdles and put $100 back in view; CoinCentral did not state whether buyers would succeed.
Demand through regulated funds remains the weak spot. The Bitwise, Grayscale and 21Shares spot products had no activity in the last 24 hours and lost $4.30 million the day before. Bitwise’s BHYP wallet also received 47.39K HYPE, worth $3.71 million, from a staking address, which CoinCentral read as a possible sign that institutional holders are selling.
Why it matters
The burn is a tangible transfer of value from the protocol to remaining holders, and it is the kind of onchain metric that traders can price directly. But the headline number flatters the picture: a rising market cap is doing as much work as the supply cut, and ETF flows show institutions are not adding exposure through wrappers. Prediction-market confidence that HYPE trades at $100 by December 31 fell 4 points to 23%, which underlines how far the market sees the token from that level. Crypto Briefing framed the burn as a strategic step by a decentralized derivatives exchange to tighten scarcity, while warning it could shift sentiment without guaranteeing price direction, and it flagged the same 4-point drop in $100 confidence ahead of the December 31 deadline.
What to watch
The Payward perpetuals approval is the clearest scheduled catalyst, and CoinCentral reported it remains pending. Daily burn size, which depends on protocol fees, and the first day of net inflows into the spot ETFs will show whether the recovery above $20 billion holds.
