Large traders on Hyperliquid held roughly $1.33 billion in Bitcoin short positions against about $952 million in longs as of October 27, 2026, a net short of approximately $377 million, Cryptobriefing reported. Glassnode described it as the cohort’s first net short stance since March, according to Crypto.news.

The change reverses positioning built earlier in the year, when the same large accounts were net long. Bitcoin was trading near $80,000 when both reports were published on October 27, roughly $5,000 below the zone where analysts model the heaviest cluster of short liquidations.

Key facts

  • Hyperliquid whale accounts held about $1.33 billion in Bitcoin shorts against roughly $952 million in longs on October 27, a net short of about $377 million, per Cryptobriefing.
  • Several individual addresses hold shorts above $200 million each; one carries a $210 million short opened near $76,000, meaning it sits underwater on paper with BTC near $80,000.
  • Glassnode, cited by Crypto.news, said the tracked traders shifted direction last week after earlier long entries near Bitcoin’s bottom, and left open whether they are front-running a further decline or risk being squeezed by a rebound.
  • Glassnode’s October 21 report, “Swept and Refilled,” put the two largest modeled liquidation clusters near $85,000 and $87,000, after a band around $80,000 was cleared on October 15.
  • Hyperliquid settles funding hourly, applying one-eighth of the computed eight-hour rate, and its interest component is 0.01% per eight hours, according to the exchange’s documentation as cited by Crypto.news.

Why the flip matters

Hyperliquid publishes positions on-chain, so the largest accounts’ exposure can be tracked by anyone, unlike a centralized exchange’s order book. That transparency has made whale positioning a watched indicator, and a dense block of shorts close to spot creates the conditions for a rapid upward move if buyers arrive.

Cryptobriefing estimates around $3.3 billion in short positions could face liquidation if Bitcoin climbs toward $85,000, describing the cluster as the obvious target. Glassnode’s earlier work, as reported by Crypto.news, said forced short closures could accelerate a move toward $87,000, though sellers had placed a large block of spot orders between $86,500 and $87,500.

The two outlets frame the same shift differently. Cryptobriefing characterizes the data as showing whales collectively betting more on Bitcoin falling than rising, and notes that current funding conditions favor shorts. Glassnode, through Crypto.news, treated the previous long trade as well timed without calling the new bearish stance a confirmed forecast of lower prices. Crypto.news also noted that spot ETF flows have been mixed, so institutional demand has not decisively turned in either direction.

Positioning around the price

Open interest in Hyperliquid’s Bitcoin perpetual contracts exceeds several billion dollars across whale accounts, per Cryptobriefing. Funding rates are the main cost of holding those positions: positive funding means longs pay shorts, negative funding reverses the flow, and Crypto.news reports that Hyperliquid samples premium prices every five seconds and averages them over each hour, with oracle prices set by validators from a liquidity-weighted median of centralized exchange spot prices.

Glassnode also placed the average cost of coins held by six- to 12-month buyers near $86,700 and its True Market Mean near $77,600, and its heatmap retained a liquidation band near $79,600 below the market, according to Crypto.news.

Crypto.news added broader large-wallet context: Lookonchain tracked 9,458 BTC, valued at $771.5 million, withdrawn from Wintermute to 40 newly created wallets since October 1 and described the moves as accumulation, while an earlier September snapshot attributed $126.25 million in Hyperliquid shorts to a Wintermute-linked address that the firm had not publicly confirmed as its own.

Why it matters

The reversal matters most for anyone holding leveraged exposure near the current price. Traders positioned short must weigh the cost of funding against a liquidation zone only about $5,000 above spot, while the earlier long build means the same wallets have already been caught on the wrong side once this year. The divergence between bearish derivatives positioning and mixed spot ETF flows means the two signals do not yet agree, which leaves the direction unresolved.

What to watch

Watch funding rates for a return to positive territory, which would raise the cost of holding these shorts, and watch the large individual addresses, especially the $210 million position, for signs of trimming or adding. On the macro side, the Federal Reserve’s October policy decision was scheduled for October 28, with September personal income and outlays and the advance third-quarter GDP estimate due October 29 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern, followed by the October meeting minutes on November 18 and the Fed’s final 2026 meeting on December 8–9.
