BNB Chain has published updated documentation for a second, EVM-compatible layer-1 provisionally named NewL1, targeting 200 ms block intervals and sub-second transaction finality, according to Cryptobriefing. The docs were revised on October 22, 2026. Founder CZ also addressed holders directly, stating that BNB will remain the only token used for gas, staking and governance across the BNB Chain networks.

The design is aimed at latency-sensitive activity, including high-frequency trading and workloads driven by AI agents. The existing BSC chain continues alongside the new network rather than being replaced, per the reporting.

Key facts

  • The documentation update is dated October 22, 2026, and describes a provisionally named NewL1.
  • Performance targets include 200 ms blocks, roughly 20 ms pre-confirmations, sub-second finality and throughput above 100,000 transactions per second.
  • The network plans to use an enhanced version of Parlia, the consensus mechanism already used by BNB Chain.
  • NewL1 currently operates as an internal, multi-validator development network described as operational as of October 2026.
  • A public testnet is anticipated by late 2026, with mainnet projected for early 2027.

What the performance targets cover

A 200 ms block interval works out to five new blocks every second. Pre-confirmations at about 20 ms are an early indication that a transaction is queued for inclusion, before it is permanently settled. Finality is the point at which a transaction can no longer be reversed, and reaching that in under a second is a material difference for traders who currently wait longer for on-chain settlement.

The throughput goal relies on two levers described in the research: consensus optimization and parallel execution, which processes multiple transactions simultaneously rather than sequentially. The plans also list native account abstraction, which lets wallets behave more like programmable accounts, a shielded privacy pool for transaction privacy, and expanded transaction capacity.

Where NewL1 sits in the roadmap

NewL1 was first highlighted in BNB Chain’s H2 2026 technical roadmap, published on July 8, 2026. That document argued on-chain infrastructure must compete with centralized exchanges on performance and named users relying on autonomous trading and AI applications as a key audience. The October update converts that sketch into concrete engineering targets.

BNB Chain positions the new network as an extension of its existing infrastructure rather than a break from it, keeping the frameworks already in place, including BSC, intact. CZ’s statement that BNB serves as the single asset across both chains addresses the most obvious concern for holders: whether a second network would dilute or split the token’s role.

Why it matters

If the targets hold, on-chain trading could close part of the responsiveness gap with centralized venues while assets remain in self-custody. That is the pitch most directly aimed at professional and algorithmic traders, and it also addresses autonomous agents that need fast, predictable settlement to operate reliably. For existing BNB holders, the single-token arrangement means the second chain adds activity without introducing a separate gas asset.

What to watch

The first checkpoint is whether the public testnet arrives in late 2026 as anticipated. The more telling test will be measured performance on that public network, where adversarial users and unpredictable demand could pull results away from the 200 ms block and sub-second finality figures promised in the documentation. The early 2027 mainnet window follows.

Performance targets validated on an internal development network do not automatically carry over to a live chain, and the reporting flags that gap explicitly. Readers should treat the published figures as goals rather than confirmed capabilities. This article is not financial advice, and cryptocurrency markets are volatile and uncertain.
