SMBC Nikko, Uniswap sign MoU for Japan DeFi gateway by mid-2027

SMBC Nikko Securities and Nethermind signed a memorandum of understanding on October 2, 2026 with Uniswap Labs, Base and Nyx Foundation to develop a Japan-focused DeFi Gateway, targeting completion by mid-2027, according to Cryptobriefing. The plan would build a liquidity-provisioning protocol whose custom pools carry compliance checks inside them, rather than adding those checks around the edges.

The agreement is a statement of intent, not a live product. Cryptobriefing reported that SMBC Nikko and Nethermind signed the MoU with Uniswap Labs, Base and Nyx Foundation, with the gateway aimed at eligible investors in Japan. Crypto.news noted the same signing day and reported that the five organisations will develop the protocol and custom pools as a development project, adding that the release does not say Japan’s Financial Services Agency has approved a product for public use.

Key facts

  • SMBC Nikko and Nethermind signed the MoU with Uniswap Labs, Base and Nyx Foundation on October 2, 2026; completion is targeted for mid-2027.
  • The partners plan to use Uniswap v4 hooks to embed anti-money laundering, counter-terrorism financing and investor protection measures directly into compliant pools.
  • SMBC Nikko created its DeFi Technology Department in February 2026, roughly eight months before the multi-party agreement, per Cryptobriefing.
  • Crypto.news reported that Base will support deployment and x402 integration, while Nethermind leads engineering, AI and smart-contract security.
  • Crypto.news reported that SMBC Nikko and Nethermind’s earlier research partnership was announced on March 6 and used automated market makers as its first area of study.

How the compliance-first design works

Uniswap v4 hooks are plug-in pieces of code attached to a pool that run custom logic around trades. In this project they are meant to carry AML and counter-terrorism financing controls with the pool itself, so protections sit inside the system rather than being appended after a trade. Crypto.news reported that Uniswap Labs introduced Permissioned Pools in July using a v4 hook standard that checks issuer-managed allowlists before approved wallets can swap or provide liquidity, and that the Japan project goes beyond that existing product by refining and validating automated market-making and hook strategies for the Japanese market.

Who does what

SMBC Nikko leads regulatory engagement and supplies compliance, risk modelling and portfolio management expertise. Nethermind handles technical design and delivery, including engineering, AI integration and smart-contract security. Uniswap Labs brings the protocol and v4 hook architecture plus liquidity-deployment strategy. Base, the blockchain managed by Coinbase Technologies, supports deployment in its Ethereum layer-2 ecosystem, and its work includes technical feedback on x402, the open payment protocol developed by Coinbase. Nyx Foundation advises on market-making strategies and hook structures. SMBC Nikko and Nethermind will give regular updates to Japan’s Financial Services Agency as the gateway develops.

The MoU also says the participants will develop asset-deployment strategies covering digital assets such as stablecoins and real-world assets, and that the partners are separately exploring what the announcement calls “agentic vaults” using verifiable and reproducible AI. No supported tokens, investor eligibility requirements, fees or minimum investment amounts were disclosed, and no issuer, stablecoin or tokenized security has been committed to the gateway.

Why it matters

Both reports frame this as a traditional securities house formally aligning with a DeFi protocol, not a clash with it. If the AML and CFT rules can travel with the liquidity pool, regulated investors in one of Asia’s most closely supervised markets could interact with decentralised infrastructure more directly. For Uniswap, the arrangement is a real-world test of whether v4 hooks work as compliance tooling; for Base, it puts Coinbase’s chain inside a regulated institutional project. The project shifts the earlier two-company research between SMBC Nikko and Nethermind into a five-party development structure.

What to watch

The five participants still need to finish the technical framework, test the proposed pool controls and continue discussions with Japanese authorities before any customer rollout. Japan’s digital-asset rulebook has been moving alongside the project — Crypto.news reported the FSA created a dedicated crypto and stablecoin division in August and published material during 2026 on financial-crime risks in DeFi, stablecoins and self-hosted wallet transactions. Crypto.news also reported that Base tokenized-stock DEX volume reached $100 million in one day in September, while Uniswap v4 handled $139.3 million of such trades over the preceding 30-day period measured by Token Terminal; SMBC Nikko has not said those assets will be available through its Japanese gateway.
